Captain Mitchell "Mitch" Buchannon is a character in Baywatch and it's spin off Baywatch Nights. He is also the main character of the entire franchise.

Mitch was one of the main semi-retired head lifeguards who gave the others their assignments, trained new recruits and organized new lifesaving methods.

At the end of the first season of Baywatch Hawaii, it seems he was killed in a boat explosion in Hawaii. But as seen in the tv movie, it was only a coma and he survived.

Character Description[]

Mitch has a lot of losses in his life. He lost a close relationship with his father because he chose to be a lifeguard, then his dad died. He lost his wife Gayle because of his dedication to his career, and came close to losing Hobie several times when Gayle sued for custody. Mitch and his brother Buzzy had a falling out and he no longer sees him. His close friend Jill Riley was killed by a shark while rescuing a child, Al Gibson, his surrogate father died while making a heroic rescue, Stephanie dumped him to return to her ex-husband who Mitch didn't know existed, and his best friend John Cort was going blind and left town, and when Mitch finally met and fell in love with Tracy, the woman of his dreams, she died of cancer. Now Mitch's mother has Alzheimer's disease and he has to face that inevitable loss. Frankly I don't know how the guy keeps going. But he does, because he is... Mitch Baywatch. Mitch Buchannon reminds of myself. No matter what happens, he's still standing.

Mitch is a tall, athletic man in his late-twenties to early thirties during the start of the series and early-forties towards the end of the series. He has dark brown curly hair and blue eyes.

Personality[]

Mitch is very dedicated to his job, preferring to patrol the beach and save lives rather than sit in an office all day.

He shares a mutual bond with his son Hobie and tries to make things right if anything ruins their relationship.

He is a good friend and popular father figure to the other lifeguards who turn to him for advice and help. He has a good sense of humor with hobbies including surfing and basketball.

Mitch can be stern and serious when the situation demands especially if a person's life is at stake.

  • Mitch is the longest serving character in the entire franchise having appeared in 206 episodes of the original series, both seasons of it's spin off and all of the films.
  • Hasselhoff was cast over Tom Wopat, William Katt, Lorenzo Lamas, Adrian Paul and Jack Scalia for the lead role of Mitch Buchannon.
  • David makes a cameo in the 2017 movie as the original Mitch Buchannon as the mentor to inspire the movie's Mitch to not give up after he lost his job.
